1. Make eye contact
2. Ask, don’t always tell
3. Listen, don’t just wait until their finished
4. Suggest words only when they really can’t find the right ones
5. Get down on their level, knee bound if you must
6. Speak age appropriately but not with ‘baby-talk’
7. Use ‘I’ messages when letting them know your needs
8. Make specific compliments, not just ‘good job’
9. Make compliments when they don’t expect them, I like the way you…sat still
10. Speak as you would like to be spoken to, softly, sweetly, respectfully, etc
